Surgical hemostats are medical devices used to clamp blood vessels or tissues to control bleeding during surgery. They are usually made of stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials, and are designed with a slender clamp body and a locking mechanism that can remain fixed after clamping to ensure that blood flow is effectively blocked during surgery. Common types include mosquito hemostats (for small blood vessels), Kelly clamps (for medium blood vessels) and Kocher clamps (with teeth, used to clamp tough tissues), each of which varies according to the surgical site and purpose.

Its functional principle is simple but crucial. It mechanically clamps the ends of blood vessels or tissues to block blood flow, provide a clear view for surgery and prevent excessive bleeding. Depending on the needs, hemostats can be used temporarily (and then removed) or used in conjunction with suturing, electrocoagulation and other techniques to permanently stop bleeding. Some modern hemostats also combine minimally invasive designs for endoscopic or robot-assisted surgery, with smaller heads and higher precision.

From an application perspective, surgical hemostats are an indispensable tool in surgery and are widely used in general surgery, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Its advantages are simple operation, quick response, and reusability (after strict disinfection). However, attention should be paid to the clamping force when using it to avoid damaging fragile tissues or causing postoperative complications. In addition, the flexibility of traditional hemostatic forceps in complex deep surgeries may be limited, which has promoted the development of adjustable or disposable endoscopic hemostatic forceps.
