Resettable Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient Fuse, or Resettable Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient Fuse, is a passive electronic component used to protect electronic circuits from overcurrent faults. It plays a key role in circuit protection of various electronic devices. It is also called a resettable fuse, a multi-function fuse (Multifuse), a polymer fuse (Polyfuse) or a polymer switch (Polyswitch).

The working principle of the resettable PPTC fuse is based on its unique material properties and physical change process. It is mainly composed of a non-conductive crystalline organic polymer matrix and carbon black particles filled in it. Under normal working conditions, that is, when the temperature is low, the polymer is in a crystalline state, and the carbon black particles are forced into the area between the crystals to form numerous conductive chains. At this time, the fuse presents a low resistance state and can allow current to pass normally. Once an overcurrent condition occurs in the circuit, when the excessive current flows through the PPTC fuse, according to Joule's law, the heat generated by the current will increase the fuse temperature. As the temperature rises, the polymer changes from a crystalline state to an amorphous state and expands. This expansion causes the carbon black particles to separate from each other, thus cutting off the conductive path and causing the fuse's resistance to increase rapidly. The increased resistance further increases the heat, causing the polymer to expand further and the resistance to continue to rise, thus forming a positive feedback process. Ultimately, the large increase in resistance causes the current in the circuit to decrease significantly, thus achieving overcurrent protection for the circuit. When the fault is eliminated and the power is removed, the PPTC fuse begins to cool because there is no more current generating heat. As the temperature drops, it will return to its original crystalline structure, the carbon black particles will form a conductive path again, and the fuse will return to a low resistance state and can continue to carry current normally. However, it should be noted that although the cooling process usually takes only a few seconds, the resistance of a tripped fuse will still be slightly higher than the initial value for several hours, and if the operating current is higher than its holding current, the fuse may not reset even if the fault has been eliminated. In addition, it may not fully recover to its initial resistance value, and it is likely to stabilize at a resistance value that is much higher than the initial value (up to 4 times), and it may take hours, days or even years to recover to a resistance value close to the initial value.

In terms of structure and composition, the resettable PPTC fuse is based on a polymer matrix with conductive particles evenly distributed inside. This unique structure gives it electrical properties in different states.
The resettable PPTC fuse has several main characteristics. In terms of overcurrent protection, when the circuit has an overcurrent or short circuit fault, it can quickly change from a low resistance state to a high resistance state, effectively limiting the current and protecting other components in the circuit from damage. It also has an automatic reset function. Once the fault causing the overload current is eliminated, the fuse can automatically return to a low resistance state without manual replacement and continue to work normally. Moreover, it has a self-locking (non-cyclic) operating characteristic. After being triggered, it will lock the high resistance state with a very small current. It will only automatically reset after the power is turned off and the fault is eliminated, avoiding the vicious cycle of faulty equipment switching on and off. At the same time, it also has the ability to withstand large currents. Some models can withstand a surge current of up to 100A. It also has lightning protection function and can be used in devices that need to limit current but cannot cause the system to lose operating performance due to instantaneous lightning strikes.

Resettable PPTC fuses are used in a wide range of applications. In computer power supplies, they are widely used due to the implementation of the PC 97 standard (which recommends sealed computers that users do not need to open), ensuring that the power supply can be effectively protected in the event of overcurrent and other faults. In aerospace and nuclear applications, the resettable PPTC fuse's feature of not requiring manual replacement makes it an ideal choice because it is difficult to replace components in these scenarios. In audio equipment, especially tweeters, when the audio amplifier outputs too much power and may damage the speaker, by connecting a resistor or light bulb in parallel with the PPTC fuse, a circuit can be designed to limit the total current through the tweeter to a safe value, avoiding speaker damage, and compared to traditional fuses, even if an overload occurs, the speaker will continue to work after the fault is eliminated, without the need to replace the fuse. In addition, it is widely used in circuit protection of hard disk drives, power supply equipment, motors, transformers and other equipment. For example, hard disk drive applications often use surface mount resettable PPTC fuses to protect them from overvoltage and overcurrent caused by power supply equipment failures; power supply equipment can use radial lead type or surface mount resettable PPTC fuses in the output circuit to protect itself from circuit failures; motors generally use radial lead type resettable PPTC fuses to prevent high temperature caused by overcurrent from damaging the winding insulation; transformers can use radial lead type or surface mount resettable PPTC fuses at the load end to use their current limiting function to prevent overcurrent damage.

When selecting a model, you need to consider multiple factors. First, you need to understand the operating characteristics of the device circuit, including the maximum ambient operating temperature, the rated non-operating current (ih) when operating normally at 25℃, the maximum operating voltage (vrms), and the minimum operating protection current (it) at 25℃. Then select a self-resetting fuse series based on the ih value, vrms value, product category, and installation method. If the ambient temperature of the equipment is not the standard 25℃, the value of the non-operating current ih should be calculated based on the linear relationship between the non-operating working current and the percentage of the rated non-operating current and the ambient temperature in the "Characteristic Diagram of the Relationship between Ambient Temperature and Non-operating Current" of the resettable fuse series. The calculation formula is: non-operating current (ih) = rated non-operating current (ih) ÷ corresponding ambient temperature percentage. Then, according to the selected resettable fuse series and the calculated ih, select the appropriate component in its corresponding specification table. The ih of the selected resettable fuse must be greater than or equal to the calculated ih value. Finally, find the minimum operating protection current (it) and operating time (sec) / current (a) values ​​in the "Electrical Characteristics" and "Resettable Fuse Operating Protection Time Curve" corresponding to the selected resettable fuse.
