Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to a technical means of detecting internal and surface defects of various engineering materials, parts, structural parts, etc. by using the changes in the response to heat, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, etc. caused by abnormal internal structure or defects of the material without damaging the object being tested, and making judgments and evaluations on the type, nature, quantity, shape, location, size, distribution and changes of the defects.

There are many common methods for non-destructive testing. Ultrasonic testing uses the characteristics of reflection, refraction and scattering of ultrasonic waves when they propagate in the medium and encounter different medium interfaces. When there are defects inside the material, the ultrasonic wave will be reflected at the defect. By receiving and analyzing the signal of the reflected wave, the location, size and shape of the defect can be determined. It is often used for internal defect detection of metal materials, composite materials, etc. Radiation detection is based on the principle that rays (such as X-rays and γ-rays) can penetrate materials and interact with materials during the penetration process, causing attenuation. When the ray passes through an object with defects, different images will be formed on the X-ray film or detector due to the different absorption capacity of the defect and the surrounding material to the ray, thus showing the existence of the defect. It is widely used to detect internal defects of castings, welds, etc. Magnetic particle testing is mainly applicable to ferromagnetic materials. It uses the interaction between the leakage magnetic field at the defect and the magnetic powder. When there are defects on the surface or near the surface of the material being tested, magnetic powder is applied on its surface. The magnetic powder will gather under the action of the leakage magnetic field, thereby showing the position and shape of the defect. It is often used to detect surface and near-surface defects of steel materials. Penetrant testing is to apply a penetrant containing a color dye or fluorescent agent to the surface of the object being tested, so that it penetrates into the defect, then remove the excess penetrant on the surface, and then apply a developer. The penetrant in the defect is adsorbed to the surface, and the defect is judged by observing the display traces. It can be used to detect surface opening defects of various metal and non-metal materials.

Nondestructive testing has extremely wide applications in many fields. In the field of aerospace, nondestructive testing is performed on the engine blades and fuselage structural parts of aircraft to ensure the flight safety of the aircraft, because any tiny defect may cause a serious accident during the flight. In the automobile manufacturing industry, it is used to detect the quality of automobile parts, such as engine blocks, wheels, etc., to ensure the performance and reliability of the car. In the field of petrochemicals, non-destructive testing is performed on pipelines, pressure vessels, etc. to promptly detect possible defects and prevent safety accidents such as leakage. In the field of construction engineering, it can be used to detect defects in concrete structures, corrosion of steel bars, etc., to ensure the structural safety of buildings.

Compared with destructive testing, non-destructive testing has obvious advantages. It does not cause damage to the object being tested, so it can detect valuable and irreplaceable items, and it can repeat the same object for multiple times to monitor the development and changes of defects. At the same time, non-destructive testing can quickly and efficiently detect objects with large areas or complex shapes, greatly improving the detection efficiency and reducing the detection cost. In addition, non-destructive testing technology can also be combined with automated equipment to realize the automation and intelligence of the detection process, and improve the accuracy and reliability of detection.
