MEMS wafer, or micro-electromechanical system wafer, is the basic material for manufacturing micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) devices. MEMS is a cutting-edge technology that integrates multiple disciplines such as micromachining technology, microelectronics technology, and material science. Dry etching uses plasma to selectively etch the wafer, which can achieve high-precision pattern transfer and is suitable for making complex three-dimensional structures; wet etching removes materials by chemically reacting chemical solutions with the surface materials of the wafer, and has a high etching rate and good uniformity. In addition, there are thin film deposition processes, such as physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which are used to deposit various functional films on the surface of the wafer, such as metal films, insulating films, etc. These films are important components of MEMS devices.

From the structural characteristics, MEMS wafers integrate a variety of structures with different functions. In terms of sensors, common ones include accelerometers, pressure sensors, gyroscopes, etc. Taking the accelerometer as an example, it contains a tiny mass block and an elastic support structure. When the MEMS wafer is subjected to acceleration, the mass block will produce displacement, and the acceleration value can be measured by detecting the displacement change. In terms of actuators, there are micromotors, microvalves, etc. Micromotors can achieve tiny rotation or linear motion through electromagnetic drive or electrostatic drive, which is used to drive the movement of micromechanical structures. At the same time, electronic circuits are also integrated on MEMS wafers for functions such as signal processing, data transmission and control, so as to achieve precise control and signal processing of MEMS devices.

MEMS wafers have many performance advantages. One of its notable features is its small size. Devices manufactured based on MEMS technology are small in size and light in weight, which can meet the needs of miniaturization and portability of modern electronic products. For example, in smartphones, compact MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes can achieve a variety of functions, such as automatic screen rotation and motion detection. Their tiny structures are sensitive to changes in external physical quantities and can accurately detect and measure various physical quantities. For example, pressure sensors can accurately measure tiny pressure changes and are used in blood pressure monitoring, air pressure measurement and other fields.
