Leather chemicals are various chemical products used in the leather production process, which play a key role in the quality, performance and appearance of leather. From raw hides to various leather products, every processing link is inseparable from the participation of leather chemicals.

There are many types of leather chemicals, which can be roughly divided into several categories such as tanning agents, fatliquors, finishing agents, and auxiliaries. Tanning agents are one of the core chemicals in leather production. They can cross-link the collagen in raw hides, thereby converting raw hides into leather with durability and stability. Common tanning agents include chrome tanning agents, vegetable tanning agents, and synthetic tanning agents. Fatliquors can give leather softness, fullness, elasticity and other properties. By filling the gaps between leather fibers, they prevent the leather from hardening and cracking. Mineral oils, natural oils and synthetic fatliquors are widely used. Finishing agents are used to improve the appearance and feel of leather, and provide leather with various colors, gloss and special effects, such as high gloss, matte, waterproof, etc. They are mainly composed of film-forming agents, pigments, and auxiliaries. Additives include various chemicals used to assist leather processing, such as degreasing agents to remove grease from raw hides, water-soaking agents to help leather absorb water, and color fixatives to improve the fastness of leather dyeing.

In the leather production process, these chemicals each play a unique role. Tanning agents give leather basic durability, fatliquors ensure the softness and mechanical properties of leather, finishing agents enhance the aesthetics and added value of leather, and additives assist in the smooth progress of each processing link. For example, during the tanning stage, chrome tanning agents can quickly combine with collagen to form a stable cross-linked structure, greatly improving the tensile strength and water resistance of leather; during fatliquor, synthetic fatliquors evenly penetrate into the leather fibers, making the leather soft and elastic; during finishing, film-forming agents form a uniform film on the surface of the leather, pigments give the leather the desired color, and additives improve the performance of finishing agents, such as leveling and drying speed.

The production process of leather chemicals is relatively complex. Taking tanning agents as an example, the production of chrome tanning agents usually involves the preparation and complexation of chromium salts. By precisely controlling the reaction conditions, such as temperature, pH value, and reactant ratio, chrome tanning agent products with stable performance are obtained. The production of fatliquor requires the modification and emulsification of oils and fats so that they can be evenly dispersed in water and effectively penetrate into leather fibers. The preparation of finishing agents is a more delicate process, which requires precise proportioning and mixing of multiple ingredients. Through grinding, dispersion and other processes, the finishing agents are ensured to have good stability and construction performance.

Leather chemicals are widely used in the leather industry, and the production of various leather products, from upper leather, clothing leather, sofa leather to automotive interior leather, cannot do without them. In the production of upper leather, the rational use of leather chemicals can make the leather have good wear resistance, folding resistance and beautiful appearance; clothing leather pays more attention to softness and feel, and the selection of fatliquor and finishing agents is particularly critical; sofa leather and automotive interior leather have high requirements for leather durability, comfort and environmental protection, and high-quality leather chemicals are needed to meet these requirements.
