A helium leak detector is a professional instrument designed to detect and measure helium escaping from a test object. From the working principle, helium leak detectors mainly work based on the unique properties of helium and related physical principles. For example, the core component of the common mass spectrometer helium leak detector is a mass spectrometer, which ionizes helium through an electron beam, and then separates and detects it according to the different mass-to-charge ratios of the ions under the action of electric and magnetic fields, so as to determine whether there is a leak and the location and extent of the leak.
Helium leak detectors are mainly divided into the following types. The first is a mass spectrometer leak detector, which is the most common and highly sensitive one. It uses a mass spectrometer to specifically identify helium molecules, and can provide extremely accurate and sensitive leak detection capabilities. It can detect extremely small leaks, such as leaks as low as 1×10⁻¹² mbar・l/s. The second is a helium sniffer, which is a portable device mainly used to locate leaks in pressurized systems. It helps technicians quickly determine the location of leaks by inhaling air samples and analyzing whether there is helium in them. It is widely used in on-site inspections of some large equipment or complex systems.

If there is a leak, the helium molecules will penetrate into the chamber, and the helium leak detector sensor inserted into the vacuum chamber can detect it, thereby determining the leak location. In the pressure test method, the object to be tested is first filled with helium or a mixture of helium and air, and then the suspected leak point is scanned with a helium leak detector. If helium is detected, the leak detector will sound an alarm to determine the leak location. In the accumulation method, the object to be tested is placed in a sealed chamber and filled with helium. After a period of time, the presence of helium in the atmosphere in the chamber is analyzed to determine the overall leakage rate of the object.
