Fuel cell seals are crucial components in fuel cell systems. They are mainly used to prevent gas and liquid leakage inside fuel cells and ensure efficient and stable operation of fuel cells. In fuel cells, multiple substances such as hydrogen, oxygen or air and electrolyte are involved. If these substances leak, it will not only reduce the performance of the fuel cell, but also may cause safety hazards.
From the working principle, fuel cell seals mainly fill the gaps between the sealing surfaces through their own elastic deformation to form a tight sealing structure to prevent the penetration of gas and liquid. For example, when the seal is installed between two components of the fuel cell, under a certain pressure, the seal will undergo elastic deformation and fit tightly on the sealing surface, thereby effectively preventing internal substances from leaking into the external environment, and also preventing external impurities from entering the fuel cell, ensuring that the chemical reaction inside the fuel cell can be carried out in a stable environment.

The material selection of fuel cell seals is crucial and needs to have a variety of excellent properties. Common materials include rubber, such as fluororubber, silicone rubber, etc. Fluororubber has excellent chemical stability, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, and can maintain stable performance for a long time in the working environment of the fuel cell, and effectively resist the erosion of hydrogen, oxygen and various chemicals. Silicone rubber has good elasticity and low-temperature performance, and can still maintain a good sealing effect in a low-temperature environment. At the same time, its electrical insulation performance is also excellent. In addition, some high-performance plastic materials and metal materials are also used in the manufacture of fuel cell seals. Plastic materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) have extremely low friction coefficients and good chemical stability, and can adapt to complex working conditions. Metal materials are mainly used in some occasions with extremely high sealing requirements and high pressure, and their strength and sealing are very reliable.

Fuel cell seals can be divided into many types according to structure and function. Common ones include gasket seals, which are a form of flat sealing. By placing a gasket between two sealing surfaces, the gasket is compressed and deformed to achieve sealing. The material and shape of the gasket are selected according to the specific application scenario, such as common rubber gaskets, metal gaskets, etc. There is also an O-ring seal, which is a rubber ring with a circular cross-section. It is installed in the sealing groove and relies on its own elastic deformation to achieve sealing. It has the advantages of simple structure, good sealing performance, and low cost. It is widely used in the connection parts of various components of the fuel cell. In addition, there is a lip seal, which uses the lip edge of the lip seal to fit tightly with the sealing surface to form a sealing effect. It is suitable for sealing between parts with relative motion, such as pumps, valves and other parts of fuel cells.

In terms of application scenarios, fuel cell seals are widely used in various types of fuel cell systems. In proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), seals are used to seal between individual cells in the battery stack, as well as to seal the connection parts between the battery stack and external pipelines and equipment, to ensure that hydrogen and oxygen react according to the predetermined path inside the battery, and to prevent gas leakage from causing battery performance degradation. In solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), due to its high operating temperature, the high temperature resistance of the seal is extremely high. The seal needs to maintain good sealing performance for a long time in a high temperature environment to ensure the effective supply of fuel and oxidant and maintain the normal operation of the battery. In hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, the reliability of fuel cell seals is directly related to the safety and performance of the vehicle. It not only ensures the sealing of the fuel cell system, but also adapts to complex working conditions such as vibration and impact during driving.

With the continuous development of fuel cell technology, the performance requirements for fuel cell seals are also getting higher and higher. In the future, fuel cell seals will develop towards higher reliability, better resistance to high temperature and chemical corrosion, better fatigue resistance and lighter weight. On the one hand, R&D personnel will continue to explore new materials and manufacturing processes to improve the performance and service life of seals. For example, new high-performance rubber materials will be developed to further improve their resistance to high temperature, chemical corrosion and fatigue through molecular structure design and optimization of additives.
