The electric vehicle current sensor (EV Current Sensor) is a vital component in the electrical system of electric vehicles. It is mainly used to accurately measure the current in the circuit and convert it into an electrical signal that can be recognized by the electric vehicle control system, so as to achieve effective monitoring and control of the vehicle power system.

From the working principle, common current sensors work based on the electromagnetic induction principle or the Hall effect. The current sensor based on the electromagnetic induction principle measures the current by detecting the change in the magnetic field generated around the current-carrying conductor. When the current passes through the conductor, a magnetic field is generated around it. The induction coil in the sensor will generate an induced electromotive force due to the change in the magnetic field. By measuring the magnitude of the induced electromotive force, the current value can be calculated. The current sensor based on the Hall effect uses the Hall element. When there is current passing through and there is a magnetic field, a voltage proportional to the current and magnetic field strength will be generated on both sides of the Hall element, that is, the Hall voltage. The current value can be obtained by measuring the Hall voltage.

According to the working principle and structural characteristics, electric vehicle current sensors are mainly divided into shunts, current transformers and Hall effect sensors. A shunt is a resistor with low resistance. When current passes through it, a voltage drop proportional to the current is generated at both ends. The current is calculated by measuring the voltage drop. It has a simple structure and low cost, but its accuracy is relatively limited. A current transformer uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to convert a large current into a small current in proportion for measurement and control. It is often used to measure higher currents. Hall effect sensors have the advantages of fast response speed, high accuracy, and good linearity. They can achieve non-contact measurement and are widely used in electric vehicles.

Electric vehicle current sensors have performance characteristics such as high accuracy, wide measurement range, and fast response. High accuracy is crucial for energy management and battery status monitoring of electric vehicles. It can accurately measure battery charge and discharge currents, help vehicles accurately evaluate the remaining battery capacity (SOC) and health status (SOH), thereby optimizing battery efficiency and extending battery life. The wide measurement range can meet the current measurement needs of electric vehicles under different working conditions, whether it is a large current shock when the vehicle starts or a stable current during normal driving, it can be accurately measured. Fast response ensures that the sensor can capture current changes in a timely manner, provide real-time data support for the vehicle control system, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the vehicle.

In terms of application scenarios, electric vehicle current sensors are mainly used in battery management systems (BMS), motor control systems, and charging systems. In BMS, by accurately measuring the battery's charge and discharge current, the battery status is monitored in real time to prevent overcharging and over-discharging of the battery, thereby ensuring the safety and service life of the battery. In the motor control system, the current sensor is used to monitor the working current of the motor so that the control system can accurately adjust the motor's output torque and speed according to the vehicle's driving needs, achieving efficient power transmission and smooth driving of the vehicle. In the charging system, it can monitor the charging current to ensure the safety and stability of the charging process and avoid charging failures or equipment damage caused by abnormal current.

Looking to the future, with the continuous development of electric vehicle technology, the performance requirements for current sensors will become higher and higher. R&D personnel will focus on improving the accuracy, reliability, and anti-interference capabilities of sensors while reducing costs and volumes. For example, new materials and manufacturing processes are used to develop more miniaturized and integrated current sensors to meet the increasingly compact electrical system layout requirements of electric vehicles.
